Man, 75, Gets 8 Years in Death of Newsboy

INDIANAPOLIS — A 75-year-old man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the shooting death of a teen-age newspaper carrier.
Marion Superior Court Judge Thomas E. Alsip said Thursday he was sensitive to the problems of the elderly but did not believe Nokomis Toombs deserved a lighter sentence because of his age.
A shotgun blast from Toombs’ home killed Scott P. Lawson, 16, as he placed a copy of the Indianapolis Star inside a breezeway door on Sept. 25. Toombs told police he mistakenly thought Lawson was one of several neighborhood teen-agers he claimed had vandalized his home.
