American Airlines has begun seasonal service to Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Jackson, Wyo., for the ski season. American is serving Steamboat Springs from its connecting hubs at Dallas/Fort Worth and Chicago, and Jackson from Chicago.

Travelers to Australia are being encouraged to apply for visas well in advance of their trip due to the increased number of applicants. Allow at least three weeks if applying by mail. For further information phone the Australian Embassy (213) 380-0980.

UCLA Extension is sponsoring a one-day program, Jan. 24, on travel writing and photography for use in newspapers and magazines. Travel writer Jack Adler, who appears regularly in The Times, will coordinate the seminar, which will be followed by an optional six-week course. Guest speakers will include Sharon Dirlam, Times Staff Writer in the Travel section; Donna and Richard Carroll, and Pamela Lechtman. Class will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 121 Dodd Hall, UCLA. The Central Coast Travel Exposition, sponsored by KSLY-FM (Sly 96 of San Luis Obispo) and KLTV (K-LITE radio), will be held next Saturday and Sunday at the Veteran’s Memorial Building in San Luis Obispo.
