San Diego College Basketball : Point Loma Nazarene Survives SCC Rally

Point Loma Nazarene College survived a late challenge from visiting Southern California College of Costa Mesa to win its Golden State Athletic Conference opener, 68-61, and improve its record to 11-3.

SCC (1-1, 11-4), which trailed, 33-19, at the half, rallied in the game’s closing minutes to cut Point Loma’s lead to 62-61 with 50 seconds remaining.

Greg Lanthier and Clayton Williams each scored two free throws to keep SCC at bay.

Athletes in Action 118, UC San Diego men--Zach Jones scored 27 points as Athletes in Action won the exhibition game in La Jolla. Leading scorers for UCSD were John Saintignon with 15 points and Mike Wilbur with 14.

Whittier 69, UC San Diego women 62--Julie Curtis had 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead Whittier College at UC San Diego. Whittier (11-2) took a 34-27 lead in the first half and UCSD (8-7) was unable to get closer than three points for the remainder of the game.

Jill Koster paced UCSD with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
