Council Panel Backs Bonds to Improve Parks
The San Diego City Council Rules Committee gave preliminary approval Wednesday to placing a $76-million bond issue to renovate Mission Bay and Balboa parks on the November ballot.
Money from the bond issue would be used to repair aging structures at the two parks and dredge Mission Bay. The city manager’s office has identified $42 million in repairs at Balboa Park, including work on the House of Charm, House of Hospitality, the Museum of Man and the San Diego Museum of Art. About $34 million would be spent at Mission Bay for dredging and repairs in the park’s restrooms, irrigation system and pathways.
“I intend to take these two bond campaigns to every pulpit in the city to get the two-thirds vote,” said Councilman Mike Gotch.
The proposal will be forwarded to the full City Council for final approval.
