Snow and cold returned to the northern Plains as an arctic blast of Canadian air replaced unseasonably warm weather, but other parts of the Midwest were treated to a fourth day of record highs. The January heat wave, which began in the northern Plains on Sunday, set more than 50 high-temperature records through Tuesday from Montana across to Michigan and as far south as Missouri, sending golfers to the links and prompting a few others to don bathing suits.
