Contractor Carl Capasso, the companion of New York City Cultural Affairs Commissioner Bess Myerson, was indicted on charges of evading federal corporate and personal income taxes in a $1.5-million scam. Capasso, 45, was named in a nine-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. U.S. Atty. Rudolph W. Giuliani said several investigations are continuing and additional charges are possible. Myerson, a former Miss America and longtime friend of Mayor Edward I. Koch, announced she would step aside from her $83,000-a-year post for up to 90 days, pending a special city investigation of issues stemming from the grand jury inquiry that led to the charges against Capasso.
