FCC May Ease Curb on Media Holdings in Single Market
The Federal Communications Commission today said it is considering relaxing rules limiting common ownership of AM and FM radio stations, television stations and newspapers in the same markets.
The FCC decided at an open meeting to propose relaxing the current one-to-a-market rules that prohibit the ownership of AM-FM stations and TV stations in the same market, or ownership of a newspaper in combination with a radio or TV station.
Among changes to be considered would be authorizing the ownership of AM radio and VHF television stations in the same market.
New ownership rules could potentially affect some major corporate takeovers involving broadcasting companies, including a current merger agreement between Capital Cities and ABC.
