Orange League : Valencia Comes On Strong to Defeat Magnolia
Dennis Burbank, a 6-foot 5-inch center, scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds to lead Valencia High School to a 51-45 Orange League victory over Magnolia Wednesday night at Valencia.
Valencia (1-0, 11-3) trailed at halftime, 30-22, but outscored the Sentinels, 10-2, in the third quarter to tie the score at 32-32.
The Tigers pulled away midway through the fourth quarter, outscoring Magnolia, 11-4. Magnolia got no closer than four points at 46-42. Valencia free throws in the game’s final minutes preserved the victory.
Magnolia (0-1, 10-4) was plagued by poor shooting, making only 6 of 26 second-half shots. Mark Lyon and Mike Goff were the only Magnolia players to score field goals in the half. Goff finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out with 53 seconds left. Lyon added 12 points.
Darren Robinson scored 12 points for Valencia.
Brea-Olinda 67, Anaheim 27--Gary Chiotti and Ron Thomas each scored 17 points to lead the Wildcats (1-0, 10-6) to an easy victory at home. Brea had a 17-0 lead after the first quarter.
Savanna 69, Western 57--Tim Tillman had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Rich Temple made 12 of 13 free throws in the second half to lead the Rebels (1-0, 3-10) at Savanna. Temple finished with 17 points, and Mike Campbell added 16 for Savanna. Chuck Powell led all scorers with 25 points for Western (0-1, 8-6).
