Some University of Miami football players have refused to apologize for their behavior before the Fiesta Bowl, despite Coach Jimmy Johnson’s public apology.

Edward T. Foote, university president, earlier called their behavior at Tempe, Ariz., where they lost the game and a national crown by a 14-10 margin to Penn State, an embarrassment. The Miami players dressed in fatigues, walked out of a steak fry and traded insults with Penn State fans.

But fullback Alonzo Highsmith, lineman Jerome Brown and several other players would have none of the apology.

“Ask Tad Foote what Yale’s record is,” said Brown, a senior. “They wear suits and tuxedos to every game and they end up 0-10. That sure brings the school a lot of money.”

Added Highsmith: “If Tad Foote is so concerned about our dress, why doesn’t he come out of his air-conditioned office and pay for our suits?”
