Nine U.S. Marine guards using riot sticks clashed with 100 villagers on Okinawa during a protest over construction of a Marine airstrip, authorities said. A. U.S. military spokesman said two Marines sustained minor injuries. The incident occurred near Aha village, in the island’s northern tip where a landing field for Marine Harrier “jump-jet” fighter planes is being built. The Japanese villagers are opposed to the landing strip on environmental grounds. Okinawa, a prefecture of Japan, lies southwest of the nation’s main islands.
