Legislation to commemorate the slaughter of 1.5 million Armenians by the Turkish government between 1915 and 1923 will be introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Richard Lehman (D-Calif.). Lehman said he would present the bill, calling for April 25 to be set aside to commemorate the genocide, to a House committee in the next two weeks. Similar bills have failed in the past because of fears they would damage U.S.-Turkish relations, according to Vahe Yacoubian, executive director of the Armenian National Committee.
