Waite Hopeful on 2 Hostages

BEIRUT —
Church of England envoy Terry Waite said today he met with the pro-Iranian Islamic Jihad and believes that prospects are good for the release of two Americans the group claims to hold hostage.
Speaking to reporters at the seaside Riviera Hotel, Waite said he delayed his scheduled departure today because he is still in the midst of “private” negotiations. Islamic Jihad has said it holds Associated Press chief Middle East correspondent Terry A. Anderson, 39, and American University agriculture dean Thomas Sutherland, 54.
