UC Extension Workshop on Dietary Guidelines

The University of California Cooperative Extension will offer a seven-session training workshop on how to put the Dietary Guidelines for Americans into practice. The workshop will be held on seven consecutive Wednesdays, March 4 through April 15, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at 2615 S. Grand Ave., Suite 400, Los Angeles. The instructor is Genevieve Ho, a nutritionist with the Los Angeles County Cooperative Extension office.

Anyone interested in nutrition and health who is willing to attend the seven training meetings and willing to volunteer at least 20 hours to teach community groups of Dietary Guidelines for Americans within one year is eligible. Enrollment is limited to 30 people. A $12 fee covers the cost of training and demonstration materials.

Dietary Recommendations

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, published by the U.S. departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, recommend the following:

--Eat a variety of foods.

--Maintain desirable weight.

--Avoid too much fat, saturated fat and cholesterol.

--Eat foods with adequate starch and fiber.

--Avoid too much sugar.

--Avoid too much sodium.

--If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.
