A return to profitability was reported by Chicago-based Inland Steel Industries for the 1986 year, largely on the strength of improved performance by its steel operating subsidiary. The most recent previous profitable year was 1981. The 1986 results reflect operating profits from integrated steel operations, the Joseph T. Ryerson & Son Inc. service center subsidiary and the J. M. Tull Metals Co. Inc. subsidiary since its May 20 acquisition.
