Malfunction Triggers Nuclear False Alarm

NEW HILL, N.C. —
An equipment malfunction at the National Weather Service triggered a warning signal Friday night in homes near the new Shearon Harris nuclear power plant, but officials say there was no nuclear alert.
Administrators at Shearon Harris had given weather radios to nearly 800 people living within five miles of the plant to help inform them in the event of an emergency.
