A study by physicians at the University of Pennsylvania indicates that rules against spearing have remarkably reduced catastrophic and fatal football injuries.

“Implementation of rule changes and coaching techniques eliminating the use of the head as a battering ram has resulted in a drop from 34 cases of permanent paralysis in the legs and arms in 1976 to 5 in 1984,” Dr. Joseph Torg said.
