Dam Bursts in Peru; 15 Killed, 45 Hurt
Fifteen people died and 45 were injured when a dam burst in the Peruvian highlands, inundating their village with water and mud, police said Sunday.
A police spokesman said a wave of water and mud destroyed or damaged 43 houses in the village of Chuschi, below a dam on the edge of Sulcaray Lake in Ayacucho province, 220 miles southeast of Lima.
The official said that recent heavy rains had weakened the dam, which burst on Friday. Because of poor communications, the news of the flood did not reached the capital until Sunday.
