LaRouche Announces 1988 Candidacy
Four-time presidential candidate Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. on Monday announced his candidacy for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination.
LaRouche was in Europe and did not attend the news conference. But a prepared statement said that he was “accelerating” his presidential campaigning because of President Reagan’s troubles with the Iran arms deal. No other explanation was given.
His supporters said that LaRouche, originally of Rochester, N.H., was not in New Hampshire because his safety there could not be guaranteed. They said he will not campaign in person in the state until the Secret Service provides adequate security.
