Share

Peruvian police arrested 120 leftist rebels in the capital of Lima after a day of violence that included an assault on the Indian Embassy, raids on two foreign news agencies and the shooting deaths of four policemen. Authorities blamed the violence on Maoist guerrillas belonging to the group Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) and said it was aimed at undermining President Alan Garcia’s current visit to India. The attacks began with simultaneous raids on the offices of the British news agency, Reuters, and Cuba’s news agency, Prensa Latina. Later, about 10 guerrillas, firing machine guns and hurling dynamite, led the assault on the Indian Embassy. Three police officers were reported shot to death at the embassy and two rebels were wounded but escaped.
