President Reagan’s new national security adviser, Frank Carlucci, will leave Thursday on a brief inspection trip to Central America, the White House announced today.

Presidential spokesman Larry Speakes said Carlucci will visit El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras, but not Nicaragua.

“He will meet with the leaders of each country and listen to their views on the current state of affairs and the situation in each country,” Speakes said.

Speakes said he did not know of any specific plans for Carlucci to meet with Nicaraguan rebel leaders.

“The visit is primarily an opportunity for Mr. Carlucci to renew his acquaintance with Central America, to become familiar with current problems and to view firsthand the democratic gains that have been achieved in the region,” Speakes said.
