Aussies Predict a Win

Iain Murray, skipper of Kookaburra III, has picked himself to win the America’s Cup finals, 4-2, but Dennis Conner of Stars & Stripes declined the opportunity to forecast the outcome.

“I am not making a prediction,” Conner said Tuesday. “Tell me the weather.”

Apparently, like most observers, Conner is less confident of the performance of Stars & Stripes ’87 if the wind is below 20 knots, as it has been almost every day since he disposed of New Zealand in the challenger finals, 4-1.

But Conner did confirm the rumor that he is considering buying a house in nearby Mosman Park, another beachfront suburb of Perth.

“I like it very much here,” he said, “and I relate very well to the West Australians, in particular. I’ve made some very good friends in Mosman Park. There is some truth to the rumor I’m considering it.”

He neither confirmed nor denied another report, that he had been aboard New Zealand’s KZ7, which trial-sailed against Kookaburra III recently.

“Was I on there?” Conner said. “I don’t want to get in anymore trouble. I don’t want (New Zealand syndicate head) Michael Fay mad at me again.”
