Seven S.D. County Schools Vie for National Education Awards
Seven San Diego County secondary schools are among the top 47 schools in California competing for awards in the 1987 National Secondary School Recognition Program, the county Office of Education announced Tuesday.
San Diego County has more entrants in the national competition than any other county in the state.
The purpose of the National Secondary School Recognition Program, run by the U.S. Department of Education, is to choose “unusually successful” public and private secondary schools.
In March, a federal review panel will begin winnowing the list of about 650 schools from across the United States. Site visits will follow in April and May. The U.S. Department of Education will name the 200 winners in June.
The San Diego County competitors, with school districts in parentheses, are:
Greenfield Junior High School (Cajon Valley Union School District); Grossmont High School (Grossmont Union High School District); Mt. Carmel High School (Poway Unified School District); Orange Glen High School (Escondido Union High School District); Poway High School (Poway Unified School District); Southwest High School (Sweetwater Union High School District), and Torrey Pines High School (San Dieguito Union High School District).
