Charges Possible Against Hasenfus

WASHINGTON — The lawyer for pardoned gunrunner Eugene Hasenfus said Wednesday night it would be “an outrage” if his client faces criminal charges for his involvement in a private supply effort to the Nicaraguan rebels.

Hasenfus and his wife arrived in Washington late Wednesday for his appearance today before a House select committee investigating the Iran arms- contra aid scandal.

The attorney, Ernest Pleger, said he was concerned that House investigators were looking into possible criminal violations by Hasenfus while he was involved in the supply effort. “I think it would be an outrage if he is prosecuted for what his country . . . wanted him to do,” he said.

Hasenfus, the lone survivor of a plane shot down by Nicaraguan troops, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for supplying arms to rebel troops but later pardoned.
