Those Who Chose the Airport as Neighbor
I’m sure that Linda Mann of Studio City and her neighbors are truly harassed by the noise of airplanes taking off over an “otherwise quiet neighborhood” (Letters, Oct. 18). And I’m sure they probably will continue to file multiple lawsuits against the airport.
Jurors need to consider, however, that the airport was already there when those harassed residents chose to live in that neighborhood. The cities of Burbank and Glendale were not hiding it. The airport has been there a long time and airplanes have always been noisy.
In the 1950s and 1960s, airplane engines were much louder. The planes flew slowly and climbed slowly so it took them longer to pass by. When I visit friends there now, I find that the airplane flights are much less disruptive than they were when I lived there 20 and 30 years ago.
Homeowner groups do us all a service when they pressure the airport managers to continue to work to reduce noise, but they won’t be doing us a favor if they force more airports to close completely.
