Haitian government troops clashed with a crowd gathered to watch a local strong man uproot a statue in front of the National Palace in Port-au-Prince, and at least one person was killed. A crowd of about 1,000 people had gathered hoping for a glimpse of Jean Baptiste Almonor, nicknamed “Rambo,” who had told a local radio station that he would uproot the statue. When police tried to push the crowd back, some people began throwing stones, and officers fired warning shots into the air. A woman who tried to flee was shot to death, police and witnesses said.
