Tammany Foe Impellitteri Dies
Vincent Impellitteri, who opposed the Tammany Hall machine to win election as mayor of New York and served in that office from 1950 to 1953, died of heart failure in a Connecticut hospital. He was 86.
Impellitteri, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, died of heart failure Thursday, officials said today. Impellitteri, the immigrant son of a shoemaker, became acting mayor after Mayor William O’Dwyer resigned Sept. 2, 1950, in the midst of a city corruption scandal to become ambassador to Mexico. In a special election to fill the remaining three years of O’Dwyer’s term, Impellitteri failed to win the Democratic nomination but ran successfully as an independent on the Experience ticket.
