UNFONDA ‘HANOI JANE’

I read of Jane Fonda’s reaction to “Platoon” with more than the usual disgust at her public statements (“After Seeing ‘Platoon,’ Fonda Wept,” by Pat H. Broeske, Jan. 25).

She has once again proven herself vulnerable to an all-too-common habit of public figures, that of rewriting one’s personal history to suit current popular attitudes.

Fonda, however, has difficulty with even comparatively recent history. She states that she did not consider American soldiers the enemy.

However, I’ll always cherish the memory of her wearing an NVA helmet as she tried her hand at sighting a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun during her Hanoi visit.

I don’t think that image endeared her to many American combat pilots, or to many other Americans for that matter. The nickname of “Hanoi Jane” was obviously well-earned and founded on fact, not spite.
