Mayor Tom Bradley filed papers that declare his intention to raise money to run again for mayor in 1989. Bradley announced that he would seek an unprecedented fifth term during a guest appearance on comedienne Joan Rivers’ television show. The filing of papers with the city clerk does not legally bind him to be a candidate in two years, when his fourth term ends, but it does allow him to raise money for the race. In response to questions about whether the mayor, 69, is prepared to continue to do the job he has held since 1973, Bradley jokingly challenged a reporter to “put on the boxing gloves with me. I’m as energetic, as active . . . as I was the first day I took office.”
