Deukmejian Cuts for the Gifted

I have been and continue to be a supporter of Gov. Deukmejian’s policies in general; however, there is one measure that he advocates that I feel is very unwise. I refer to his decision to phase out or eliminate the gifted/talented education programs in the public school system.

The gifted/talented program should not be sacrificed in order to find additional funds for the purpose of reducing class size; other sources must be sought to accomplish that goal.

Americans are painfully aware that students from other Western countries and Japan have surpassed us with respect to academic achievement. As the youth represent the future of our country, it is of prime importance to encourage and support our gifted and talented students to the utmost.

Education, particularly of these students who are likely to excel and make significant contributions to our society, must have priority funding. To quote from a well recognized educational organization, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”
