Meskhi Rallies to Take USTA Title at Braemar
Leila Meskhi of the Soviet Union defeated Clare Wood of Great Britain, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, Sunday to win the $25,000 USTA women’s tennis tournament at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana.
Meskhi won $4,000 while Wood won $2,325. Both earned automatic spots in next week’s $75,000 Virginia Slims of Oklahoma.
Lucinda Gurney of Palos Verdes Estates and Amy Frazier of Rochester, Minn., beat Karen Dewis of Canada and Lynn Lewis of San Diego in the doubles final, 6-3, 6-2.
Gurney and Frazier split $750. Dewis and Lewis split $400.
