Hazardous waste from the Stringfellow acid pits near Riverside are being trucked to Utah because California lacks facilities to handle the material, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency official said. Environmental activists contend that the move is proof that Utah is becoming the dumping ground for hazardous wastes in the West. Brian Ullensvang, EPA’s project manager for the Stringfellow site, said one or two truckloads of filter cakes from a ground water treatment facility are being shipped each week to the U.S. Pollution Control Inc. facility in Utah. These shipments are expected to continue for months, and possibly years, he said. The filter cake is a hazardous waste under California law because it contains elevated levels of chromium, a heavy metal.
