Mordechai Vanunu, awaiting trial on spying and treason charges for selling Israeli nuclear secrets to a London newspaper, ended a 33-day hunger strike to protest being isolated and allowed only an hour of daily exercise in a Jerusalem prison. “Vanunu stopped his strike because he wants to be like (Mahatma) Gandhi,” defense lawyer Amnon Nichroni said. “He wants to gain strength for other hunger strikes should he be denied human rights in the future.” Meanwhile, a judge denied Vanunu’s appeals to talk with his American girlfriend and an Anglican priest, ruling that he might tell them secrets that endanger state security.
