Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) and former Rep. Ed Zschau (R-Los Altos), his challenger in last November’s election, took out huge personal loans to boost their campaigns in the home stretch, Federal Election Commission records show. Zschau’s campaign committee still owes him $440,000 and Cranston’s owes him $375,250. According to final figures, Zschau outspent Cranston, $11.5 million to $10.9 million, making the race the second most expensive in U.S. Senate history. If the $6.1 million spent by six also-rans in the GOP primary is included, the $28.5 million total broke the previous record of $27.7 million set in Texas in 1984.
