A lawyer for Jerry Tarkanian, coach of the top-ranked University of Nevada Las Vegas basketball team, is opposing National Collegiate Athletic Assn. efforts to file more briefs in a Nevada Supreme Court dispute over Tarkanian’s recruiting methods.
Sam Lionel submitted legal points at Carson City, Nev., in opposition to the NCAA’s request to file additional legal briefs in support of its appeal of a 1984 state district court ruling favoring Tarkanian.
The pending Supreme Court case involves the NCAA’s appeal of a ruling by a judge in Las Vegas that the NCAA violated Tarkanian’s due process rights in 1977 when it ordered the school to suspend the coach for alleged infractions in the school’s basketball program. Tarkanian obtained a court injunction and continued coaching.
