Unisys to Shift 100 Workers to Rancho Bernardo Plant

Unisys will transfer about 100 employees to its Rancho Bernardo semiconductor plant after it closes a similar manufacturing facility in Minnesota later this year, the company said Friday.

Detroit-based Unisys, formed last year with the merger of Sperry and Burroughs corporations, will transfer about 100 of its highly skilled semiconductor plant employees from former Sperry plants in Eagan and Roseville, Minn., to the former Burroughs plant in Rancho Bernardo.

About 800 jobs will be eliminated in the plant closings, according to a Unisys spokesman. Unisys has about 700 employees in Rancho Bernardo and 12,000 employees in Minnesota.

By the end of the year, Unisys’ Rancho Bernardo facility will handle semiconductor product development and fabrication that now is being performed at the Eagan facility. That operation includes some of Unisys’ defense and commercial products.

Unisys previously had announced that it would not keep the two semiconductor facilities that were separately operated by Burroughs and Sperry.
