Two areas in Sylmar were evacuated Friday after detectives investigating car thefts found two caches of explosives and arrested a man and woman, Los Angeles police said.
Investigators first raided a house in the 13600 block of Eldridge Avenue, where they found the explosives, two stolen cars, auto parts, tools and “a large quantity of firearms,” Officer Steve Mirabal said.
Detectives arrested Robbie Emery, 37, and Donald Emery, 47, at the house on suspicion of possessing explosive material, Mirabal said.
Later Friday, using the same search warrant, detectives found more explosives and property taken in a burglary at an unidentified business in the 11400 block of San Fernando Road, Mirabal said.
Although no detonating devices were found near the explosives, the areas around the two sites were evacuated as a safety measure, Detective Richard Kensic said.
Police did not disclose what type of explosives were found or what they thought their purpose was.
