But First, Conner Had to Wrest the Cup From New York Yacht Club

Share

I am amazed that no one on your staff has yet appreciated the true genius of Mr. Conner in his America’s Cup adventures. He suffered the slings of outrageous criticism, lured the Kiwis and Kookas into a false sense of security, and then, when it was too late for them to adjust, unleashed his boat and has triumphantly returned the Cup to his own home port.

It is now clear that he lost the Cup intentionally in 1983 in order to pry it loose from the stodgy NYYC, for which all true yachting fans must give him thanks.
