Regan Aide Will Not Take Buchanan’s Post

WASHINGTON — Dennis Thomas, the top aide to White House Chief of Staff Donald T. Regan, said Saturday that he will not become President Reagan’s communications director.
The post becomes vacant March 1 with the departure of Patrick J. Buchanan, and Thomas has been mentioned as a likely successor.
Thomas denied the report in historical terms. “Sherman was tentative in his answer compared to mine,” he said.
Civil War Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, when approached about running for President, sent a response to the Republican National Convention on June 5, 1884: “I will not accept if nominated and will not serve if elected.”
