A Port Hueneme man who collapsed after a violent struggle with police officers was pronounced dead on arrival at St. John’s Hospital Regional Medical Center in Oxnard. Officers said Thomas Harvey, 34, had barricaded himself in the bedroom of his apartment and threatened them with a beer bottle when they broke in to rescue his sons, 6 and 11. They said he continued to fight in the patrol car and was being restrained at the jail when he collapsed and stopped breathing. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was attempted by paramedics en route to the hospital, but the efforts failed to restore vital signs. An autopsy did not pinpoint the cause of Harvey’s death and the Ventura County coroner’s office was awaiting results of toxicological tests.
