Winning Streak by L.B. Women Ends in Hawaii
Cal State Long Beach’s 20-game winning streak came to an end Saturday night as the 49er women shot only 33% from the field in a 67-66 overtime loss to Hawaii in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Honolulu.
Long Beach, 20-2 overall, 10-1 in conference and ranked fourth in the nation, made just 25 of 76 shots but had a chance to win in regulation when Cindy Brown’s basket gave the 49ers a 63-62 lead with 26 seconds remaining.
But the Wahines (16-4, 8-4) sent the game into overtime when Brown fouled Melissa Barker, sending Brown to the bench with her fifth foul and Barker to the free-throw line with 10 seconds remaining. Barker made one of two free throws to tie the game at 63-63.
Hawaii took a 67-63 lead in overtime, but Long Beach rallied, pulling within one when Margaret Mohr hit a 15-footer with 1:06 left. The 49ers had two chances to win in the final minute, but Mohr missed the front end of a one-and-one with 12 seconds left, and after Long Beach rebounded the miss, Hawaii’s Da Houl stole the ball with six seconds left to seal the win.
