South African-born track star Zola Budd will fly to West Germany this week for treatment of nagging leg and hip injuries which could end her career, according to British press reports.
The Mail on Sunday tabloid quoted the 20-year-old runner as saying she may have to quit if doctors decide the injuries make it too dangerous for her to continue.
“I desperately want to continue running,” Budd was quoted as saying at her home in Guildford, near London. “But I must wait to see whether the German doctor will give me the go-ahead for serious training.”
The injuries, diagnosed while Budd was training in her homeland, have cast doubts on her defense of the world cross-country title in Warsaw next month.
