Two men disrupted the start of a recital by Soviet pianist Lazar Berman at New York’s Carnegie Hall on Monday night. As Berman sat down at the piano, a man in the sixth row stood up and began shouting. The man offered little resistance when plainsclothes police arrived to escort him out. After applause, Berman again prepared to play when a man from the same row shouted “Free Soviet Jews.” He, too, was removed. Promoter Marvin Schofer said the men were charged with disturbing the peace. The concert started half an hour late because the audience was requested to pass through metal detectors when entering the hall. Berman will play at Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena on Feb. 19.
