12 Found Guilty in Lab Animal Protest

Twelve animal rights activists were found guilty Thursday of obstructing public property stemming from an April 24, 1986, demonstration at UCLA in which they protested the use of laboratory animals for medical research.

Los Angeles Municipal Judge Kathryne Ann Stoltz found each of the 12 members of Last Chance for Animals guilty of one count each of obstructing a public right-of-way. She set sentencing for Tuesday. The charge carries a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, said Deputy City Atty. Dennis Jensen.

Jensen said 17 members of the group, including the 12 found guilty, were cleared of similar charges involving a July 21, 1986, protest at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
