Support the Gifted

It has come to my attention that in 1987 the gifted-talented program will be decimated, and in 1988 eliminated. I feel this is not to the advantage of our children, either those in regular classes or those now in the gifted-talented program.

It certainly is not to the advantage of our great country, which cries for us to add to knowledge, provide more incentive to our youth and to make it greater. These high-achiever kids are craving to be challenged. We need to give them challenging and harder material. The children who are not “as motivated,” need more time in basics so they do not graduate from high school without knowing how to read and write, as is the apparent result today.

I do not know the solution, but I do know that you cannot take a classroom, even with as few as 20 children, and just wish that they were more motivated, and magically it would be so. Maybe we should spend extra time and volunteers to motivate more of the students, not bore our already highly motivated ones.
