More than 200 people cast war toys into a bonfire in Ocean Park on Saturday to demonstrate opposition to war-themed children’s play.
“I am here because we don’t want to put any more children in wheelchairs,” said Ron Kovic, a Vietnam veteran who lost the use of his legs. “I remember when I was young, there were toy machine guns. . . . I’m sitting in a wheelchair because of war toys,” he said.
Protest organizer Jerry Rubin, a Santa Monica activist, said he is seeking legislation to limit the use of children’s television programming as a way to sell war toys.
