About 5,000 people joined a rally in the eastern Salvadoran town of San Miguel to protest the military draft and a new tax to help pay for the U.S.-supported war against leftist guerrillas. The rally, by the National Union of Salvadoran Workers and the Confederation of Salvadoran Cooperatives, was the largest outside the capital in the current wave of conservative-led protests against the policies of President Jose Napoleon Duarte.
