Threatening weather failed to daunt the competitive urge of 816 skippers and crews from 16 yacht clubs who turned out Saturday and Sunday for the Southern California Yachting Assn.’s 58th Midwinter Regatta.

Light weather prevailed both days, despite the threat of rain on Sunday.

The Midwinters, as they are known to Southland yachtsmen, usually heralds a new season of sailing competition.

The regatta continues today with Los Angeles Yacht Club hosting 10 classes of large boats, and Coronado Cays Yacht Club, San Diego, which also conducts races for ocean racing yachts.
