Winds Cut Power to 53,000 Customers

Share

Gusty winds knocked out electrical power for about 53,000 Southland customers for periods of 60 seconds to two hours Monday, but the blustery breezes should ease off today, forecasters said.

Steve Newman, chief meteorologist of Earth Environment Service, said a significant change in the weather pattern is developing, with much cooler temperatures in the offing later in the week.

The U.S. Weather Service said Monday’s north to northwest winds of 15 to 25 m.p.h., which gusted up to 35, should diminish today. The skies are expected to be partly cloudy.

Edward Freudenberg of the Department of Water and Power said Monday’s winds caused widespread electrical outages in the western San Fernando Valley, Woodland Hills, Canoga Park, Sunland-Tujunga-Sylmar, in South-Central Los Angeles and in the Hollywood Hills.

About 7,000 customers were without power for up to two hours.
