The San Diego Yacht Club put the America’s Cup on display Tuesday at City Hall and plans to display the prize throughout the country.

City officials said the Cup will be behind a plexiglass shield and will remain in the lobby for the rest of the week. The Cup is expected to be on display from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., said George Story, assistant to the city manager.

Carolyn Maher, spokeswoman for the yacht club, said the trophy is expected to be moved to the County Administration Center for all of next week.

“They decided to have it travel around America so America could see it,” Maher said.

Stars & Stripes skipper Dennis Conner, his crew and the Cup recently returned from triumphant celebrations with President Reagan at the White House and a parade held for them in New York City. Conner scored an overwhelming victory over the defending Australian boat, Kookaburra III, earlier this month.

After the Cup toured the East Coast cities, the San Diego Yacht Club placed it in a vault at Home Federal Savings & Loan.
