Whittier : School Election to Be Called

Share

The Los Nietos School District will hold a special election to fill a board seat vacated in December by Ricardo Alvarez, who moved out of the district. The election probably will be held in November, said Mark Forgy, consultant to Los Angeles County schools, which is responsible for calling special school board elections.

State law gave Los Nietos board members until Monday to replace Alvarez. They interviewed six candidates, then deadlocked 2-2 over the appointment of Louis Sanchez, a Whittier glass contractor. In the absence of an appointment, the county schools superintendent must call an election.

Los Nietos Supt. Terry Giboney said that the cost to the district may be negligible, since regular elections will be held in November anyway. Giboney said it is possible that board members will want the seat filled sooner, in which case the district would have to pay for a special election. Alvarez’s term would have expired in November, 1989.
